The Internet of Things represents the new frontier of Industrialisation. Each “thing” inside the network will be uniquely identified with an original Internet address. It will be accessible through the internet and will be able to interact with informative systems. It is necessary to distinguish between the concepts IoT (for consumers) and IIoT (for businesses). In Germany, this project is known as “Industry 4.0” while in the United States it is referred to as “Industrial Internet of Things” (IIoT). The focal point of the concept that is steered towards consumers is people, domestic use, electronic devices, cars, computers, and many other objects of common use.

Industry 4.0 (IIoT), on the other hand, creates opportunities for companies, production plants, or entire sensor networks.

IIoT or Industry 4.0 is an idea that should help to improve operational effectiveness and industrial production and therefore create further growth and improve the competitiveness of international companies. Thanks to the enormous amount of data that can be collected from the network of machines and sensors it will be possible to improve the entire production chain, analysing in detail the weaknesses of the system and taking advantage of the technology to take back that competitive advantage that industries in developed countries seem to have lost due to globalisation.
